In an exclusive telephone conversation from his hospital bed on Sunday, August 22, the renowned civil rights leader expressed his ongoing support for vaccinations while explaining why his wife, Jacqueline, had not received the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have had both my shots,\u201d Jackson said in the telephone call from Northwestern Memorial Hospital. \u201cMy wife did not receive the vaccine because she has pre-existing conditions that were of concern.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jackson maintained the importance of vaccination, noting that there are more stringent variants of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said he and Jacqueline are receiving the \u201cbest of care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The telephone call came just one day after his organization, the Rainbow Push Coalition, revealed the positive tests and hospitalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The call included National Newspaper Publishers Association President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., a longtime friend and comrade in the fight for civil rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both disciples of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackson, and Dr. Chavis expressed concern that some media members would exploit Jackson\u2019s positive tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jackson issued a reassurance of his strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m doing fine,\u201d Jackson insisted. \u201cMy wife is here, and she\u2019s being cared for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though he\u2019s battling Parkinson\u2019s disease and now diagnosed with Covid, Jackson\u2019s voice appeared strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said his battle for freedom, justice, and equality would continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a fighter, a warrior,\u201d Chavis added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those who work closely with the Rev. and Mrs. Jackson, were tested after Jacqueline Jackson visited her doctors for a routine checkup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As per medical protocol, Mrs. Jackson received a Covid test, triggering doctors to test Jackson and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The icon said he wasn\u2019t sure when he or his wife might be discharged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since news of the couple\u2019s illness and hospitalization, social media has seen a flood of well wishers express love and prayers to Rev. and Mrs. Jackson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Texas Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro, the Rev. Al Sharpton, and King\u2019s daughter, Bernice King, were among those who sent prayers for the couple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey need our sincere and intense prayers,\u201d Rev. Sharpton insisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Castro added, \u201cSending strength and prayers to Rev. Jackson and his wife, Jacqueline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
King also said she was \u201cpraying\u201d for the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rev. Jackson, 79, and Jacqueline, 77, have been married for nearly 60 years. The couple has six children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In November 2017, doctors diagnosed Rev. Jackson with Parkinson\u2019s disease, a central nervous system degenerative disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Actor Michael J. Fox and the late Muhammad Ali count among the more famous sufferers of the disease, primarily affecting motor skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
