Tina Turner, the \u201cQueen of Rock \u2018n Roll\u2019 whose legend grew after she overcame a bitter divorce to musician Ike Turner that was filled with violence, has died at the age of 83.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The superstar\u2019s family confirmed her death in a statement on Wednesday, May 24, noting that Turner died \u201cpeacefully\u201d at her home near Zurich, Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cStarting with her performances with her ex-husband Ike, Turner injected an uninhibited, volcanic stage presence into pop,\u201d Rolling Stone\u2019s<\/em> Brittany Spanos declared in a tribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEven with choreographed backup singers \u2014 both with Ike and during her own career \u2014 Turner never seemed to reign in,\u201d Spanos, who co-authored the tribute with David Browne, asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHer influence on rock, R&B and soul singing and performance was also immeasurable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHer delivery influenced everyone from Mick Jagger to Mary J. Blige, and her high-energy stage presence (topped with an array of gravity-defying wigs) was passed down to Janet Jackson and Beyonc\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTurner\u2019s message \u2014 one that resounded with generations of women \u2014 was that she could hold her own onstage against any man,\u201d Spanos and Browne recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Born Anna Mae Bullock in Tennessee in 1939, Turner started her career in 1958 as the lead singer for Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Later, the couple changed the name to the Ike & Tina Revue and spun out hit after hit with songs like \u201cNutbush City Limits,\u201d \u201cRiver Deep,\u201d and the seminal \u201cProud Mary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Following a tumultuous and abusive relationship, Tina escaped from Ike\u2019s clutches in 1976 with no money and just the clothes on her back that reportedly were bloodied following Ike\u2019s latest assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During divorce proceedings, Tina simply demanded that she keep her stage name which the judge granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With assistance from rock stars like Mick Jagger and David Bowie, Turner rebounded several years later and topped the pop music charts with her 1984 solo album, Private Dancer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The album included a bevy of hit singles, including a remake of Al Green\u2019s \u201cLet\u2019s Stay Together,\u201d and \u201cWhat\u2019s Love Got to Do With It,\u201d which became the title of her successful 1993 biopic starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She then enjoyed the starring role alongside Mel Gibson in the 1995 movie, \u201cMad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.\u201d In 1986, Tina wrote her memoir, \u201cI, Tina,\u201d which writers used to create the film, \u201cWhat\u2019s Love Got to Do With It.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Over her career, Turner earned 11 Grammy Awards, and sold an estimated 180 million records globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 2001, Turner earned induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and, in 2008, after having taken a hiatus from performing, toured the world for her 50th anniversary in show business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHeaven has gained an angel,\u201d singer Ciara tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThank you for the inspiration you gave us all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Defender Network\u2019s Twitter account praised Turner as \u201can unstoppable musical force who exuded grace and resilience. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n And hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash said Turner would be missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMy condolences to the Turner family,\u201d Flash said. \u201cRest in peace Tina Turner you will be missed.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Tina Turner, the \u201cQueen of Rock \u2018n Roll\u2019 whose legend grew after she overcame a bitter divorce to musician Ike Turner that was filled with violence, has died at the age of 83.
