Jackson Best Column Writing category for his June 26 \u2013 July 2 commentary, \u201cJournalist by profession, Black by nature,\u201d written in response to the not guilty verdict handed down June 20, 2017 in the manslaughter case of Jeronimo Yanez, the St. Anthony police officer who killed motorist Philando Castile on June 6, 2016. The&nbsp;<em>Los Angeles Wave<\/em>&nbsp;took first place in the category with the&nbsp;<em>Washington Informer<\/em>&nbsp;earning second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award marks the fourth consecutive year&nbsp;<em>Insight News<\/em>&nbsp;has been honored by the NNPA (2015, first place, Best Column, 2016, first place, Best Community Service and third place, Best Use of Photography, 2017, second place, Best Special Edition).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karen Carter Richards, the first vice chair of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and publisher of the&nbsp;<em>Houston Forward Times<\/em>, received the highly-coveted Publish of the Year Award during the 2018 NNPA Foundation Merit Awards in Norfolk, Va. Richards, who remained in Houston recovering from an illness, was represented by her associate editor, Jeffrey L. Boney. During an earlier interview, Richards expressed her undying appreciation for the Black Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Black Press has always been and will continue to be relevant. We are the voice, the true voice of our people,\u201d said Carter Richards. \u201cWe have recorded our history for 191 years like no other media could ever do. We have recorded many stories\u2026our celebrations, our injustices and those hidden, treasured stories that came from our communities that we have always found value in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Merit Awards recognizes individual newspapers, publishers and other staff members that have excelled in various newspaper categories such as Best Editorial, Best Column, Community Service, Best Layout &amp; Design, Best Church Page, Best Sports Section and other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Miami Times<\/em>&nbsp;took home 12 Merit Awards.&nbsp;<em>The Birmingham Times<\/em>&nbsp;won the John H. Sengstacke Award for General Excellence Award. The&nbsp;<em>Miami Times<\/em>&nbsp;also earned an award in the General Excellence category that focused on the number of points earned throughout the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<em>North Dallas Gazette<\/em>&nbsp;earned first place in the Robert S. Abbott Best Editorial Award while the&nbsp;<em>Washington Informer<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Final Call<\/em>, respectively, took home second and third place awards in the category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<em>St. Louis American<\/em>, a perennial winner at the NNPA Merit Awards, cashed in eight awards, this year, including first place finishes for Best Entertainment Section, Best Use of Photographs, Best Original Advertising, Best Circulation Promotion, and the Miller Coors A. Phillip Randolph Messenger Award for Digital Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<em>Philadelphia Tribune<\/em>&nbsp;won seven awards, including first place awards for Best Church Section, Best Business Section, and Best Sports Section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other winners included the&nbsp;<em>Chicago Crusader<\/em>, the&nbsp;<em>AFRO-American<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Seattle Medium<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Los Angeles Sentinel, Houston Defender<\/em>, the&nbsp;<em>New Tri-State Defender, Richmond Free Press<\/em>, the&nbsp;<em>New Journal and Guide<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Atlanta Voice<\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em>Indianapolis Recorder<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are all winners even if you didn\u2019t hear your named call,\u201d said Amelia Ashley-Ward, NNPA Foundation chair and publisher of the&nbsp;<em>San Francisco Sun-Reporter<\/em>. \u201cWhen one of us wins, we all win.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the 2018 Merit Awards, publishers were independently judged in 20 different journalistic categories and Ashley-Ward said it\u2019s all part of the Foundation\u2019s goal of continuing to deliver on its vision to preserve the historical legacy of the Black Press while expanding its reach and impact in the United States and abroad through technology and innovation in today\u2019s marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince the first publication of Freedom\u2019s Journal in 1827, the Black Press has remained on the frontlines of reporting and distributing the news, achievements, challenges, aspirations and ongoing advances in the cause and mission of sustainable development and progress for African Americans and all others who cry out for freedom and justice,\u201d said NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brenda H. Andrews, the publisher of the&nbsp;<em>New Journal and Guide<\/em>&nbsp;and host of this year\u2019s convention, said that the Black Press lends an authentic and needed voice to the issues and concerns of continuing racial economic, income and health disparities.
