Yes, our grandmothers and great grandmothers were maids. Yes, our grandfathers, great grandfathers were sharecroppers. Some were even numbers runners. If they were fortunate they were Pullman porters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, many of us have dined on and continue to dine on fried chicken and watermelon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And no, there\u2019s not a thing for which to be ashamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the message behind a collection of art called \u201cHysterio Types\u201d \u2013 the creation of artist Meyer Warren. \u201cHysterio Types\u201d was born following the release of Jay-Z\u2019s \u201cStory of OJ\u201d video, which used exaggerated cartoon depictions of Black people to tell a story of elevating out of present circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe \u2018Sambo\u2019 character was used in a derogatory way to depict Black people. What I do (with \u2018Hysterio Types\u2019), it\u2019s taking what was intended to make fun of us and flip it into a positive,\u201d said Warren. \u201cSo I may put a character eating watermelon in my painting and I want people to think there\u2019s nothing wrong with eating watermelon. Our people would eat watermelon because in the hot sun it provided needed nutrients and electrolytes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An abstract artist, Warren\u2019s works are filled with hidden \u201cgems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn many of my pieces you\u2019ll see \u2018XYZ\u2019 and that has meaning,\u201d explained the St. Paul native, Warren. \u201cX is the unknown, Y is the question and Z is the answer. It\u2019s the dark, the spark and the clarity. I want people to look at my art and research for understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHysterio Types\u201d will soon be wearable art, as Warren has teamed with Black Excellence Clothing founder Houston White to co-produce a line of shirts, hoodies, jackets and more. The line was set to make its debut April 14 but the 20 inches of snow in the area forced a postponement to May 19 \u2013 a date that was chosen with intention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cThat\u2019s Malcolm X\u2019s birthday,\u201d revealed Warren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;The launch event takes place from 6 p.m. \u2013 10 p.m. at H.
