{"id":3793,"date":"2025-06-26T17:54:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T17:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apexsamplework.com\/insightnews\/?p=3793"},"modified":"2026-07-06T18:01:54","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T18:01:54","slug":"andrea-jenkins-calls-for-resistance-healing-in-face-of-supreme-court-ruling-on-trans-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apexsamplework.com\/insightnews\/2025\/06\/26\/andrea-jenkins-calls-for-resistance-healing-in-face-of-supreme-court-ruling-on-trans-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Andrea Jenkins calls for resistance, healing in face of Supreme Court ruling on trans rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshistory.org\/education-resources\/biographies\/andrea-jenkins\">Andrea Jenkins<\/a>, Minneapolis City Council member and the first openly transgender Black woman elected to public office in the U.S., called for renewed resistance and \u201cradical love\u201d in response to rising anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and last week\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-supreme-court-rules-against-challenge-youth-transgender-care-ban-2025-06-18\/\">U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding a Tennessee law banning gender-affirming care for minors.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@InsightNewsMN\">The Conversation with Al McFarlane<\/a>&nbsp;during Friday\u2019s Healing Circle segment, Jenkins described the ruling as part of a larger movement seeking to erase trans people from public life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI\u2019m not exaggerating when I say we are experiencing a coordinated erasure,\u201d Jenkins said. \u201cThey are trying to make us invisible, remove us from public spaces, rewrite textbooks and erase our contributions to society.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court ruling, delivered on June 18 in a 6\u20133 vote, allows Tennessee to enforce its ban on gender-affirming healthcare for minors while lower court challenges continue. The decision has implications for similar laws in at least 25 other states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jenkins, who transitioned in her 30s and has served on the Minneapolis City Council since 2018, reflected on the personal and political weight of the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy age 30, I was slowly dying inside,\u201d she said. \u201cI had to live as myself, regardless of the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the broadcast, which is co-hosted by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbmsmn.org\/directory\/bravada-garrett-akinsanya\/\">Dr. Bravada M. Garrett-Akinsanya, Ph.D., LP, LISCW,<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;Jenkins emphasized the connection &nbsp;between trans rights, racial justice, and historical resistance. She invoked the legacies of Audre Lorde, Marsha P. Johnson, and other Black queer thinkers, calling on communities to \u201cstand up and speak out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t just about trans people,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is about the entire community being under attack; our rights, our history, our families, our futures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to legal and political challenges, Jenkins referenced repeated threats to her safety in office, including vandalism of her home. \u201cI live with fear,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I also live with courage. And I am not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jenkins warned that the shift in federal legal precedent signals a deeper national crisis. \u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing isn\u2019t new,\u201d she noted. \u201cIt\u2019s an old pattern, just recycled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, she emphasized that healing is possible, particularly when communities ground themselves in solidarity and cultural memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe need to remember who we are,\u201d she said. \u201cAs Black people, as queer people, as people of conscience. Our stories matter.
