We all know \u2018Who is Jill Scott?\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of journalism\u2019s cardinal rules is never begin a story with the date unless&nbsp;<em>\u2026 unless \u2026<\/em>&nbsp;the date itself is significant. Aug. 26, 2000 is that significant to me. That\u2019s the date I asked the now rhetorical question: \u201cWho is Jill Scott?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Feb. 25, 2020 at The Fillmore in Minneapolis that question was answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Aug. 26, 2000 I hopped in my friend Carlton\u2019s new red Volkswagen Golf as we headed to the wedding of our great friends, Anthony and Judy Love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou hip to Jill Scott?\u201d Carlton quizzed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNaw, who\u2019s that?\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe\u2019s dope. She\u2019s down with The Roots,\u201d was Carlton\u2019s retort, knowing that would get my interest peeked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was a big fan of The Roots. Back then, they weren\u2019t the juggernaut they have now become. Neither was Jill Scott. The Roots were emerging artists just starting to get a national buzz. But to have that Roots \u201cstamp of approval\u201d was enough for me. And, when I heard Carlton say \u201cThe Roots,\u201d I immediately thought hip-hop, but then he popped in the CD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wasn\u2019t hip-hop at all \u2026 this was soul in its rawest, most pure form. This was a new kind of soul. This was&nbsp;<em>neosoul.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was with that fond memory firmly implanted in my mind that I entered Minneapolis\u2019 freshly minted concert venue, The Fillmore last night. But in case I, or anyone else, forgot \u201cWho is Jill Scott?\u201d we were quickly and wonderfully reminded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Released in January 2000, \u201cWho is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1\u201d is now 20-years-old and it has aged like the finest of wines. Listening to Jilly from Philly\u2019s debut album is a treat in itself. Having it sung to you track-by-track with added operatic improvisations and comedic adlibs by the virtuoso herself is almost indescribable. But allow me to offer this feeble attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the accompaniment of an all-male band and background singers \u2026 one diva on stage was more than enough \u2026 Jill Scott reminded the packed house not only \u201cWho is Jill Scott,\u201d but she reminded us why we give a damn in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not sure what resonates more with the singer\u2019s fans, her voice or her spirit. Most likely it\u2019s a combination of the two. With Jill, there\u2019s a connectedness \u2026 a familiarity. There\u2019s the duality we love. It\u2019s her sending out blessings and love to her fellow queens and in the same exact sentence saying a certain type woman (a name I will refrain from using), \u201cBe doing too much and not enough at the same damn time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s her singing the gritty and humorous lyrics of \u201cGettin\u2019 in the Way\u201d and transitioning into \u201cHe Loves Me\u201d and for a moment turning The Fillmore into an opera house, singing a beautifully crafted Spanish interlude akin to one in \u201cLa Vida Breve\u201d then taking us to D.C. with the hard-driving go-go percussions behind \u201cIt\u2019s Love.\u201d It\u2019s her (tactfully, and in song) admonishing everyone recording the performance with their cell phones and \u2013 without missing a beat \u2013 breaking into the now prophetic warning song, \u201cWatching Me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I once joked Frankie Beverly has the easiest job in music because he never has to sing in concert because the audience does it for him. Well, Jill could have the second easiest job, but she\u2019s not ready to retire her vocals just yet. So, while the audience took over on \u201cThe Way,\u201d Jilly from Philly did what a Philly woman does \u2013 she took over. No one voice can compete. On Feb. 25 at The Fillmore, not even a thousand voices could compete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho is Jill Scott?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is within the question. Jill Scott has transitioned being a noun; she\u2019s a verb. She is action. She is an occurrence. She is the main part of the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who need it spelled out, her name is \u201cJ-I-LL-S-C-O-T-Tee.
